Fish Food & Water Care

Our tropical fish section features a wide variety of colourful and active species suited to community aquariums as well as more specialised setups. Tropical fish are among the most popular choices for home aquariums due to their vibrant colours, interesting behaviours, and compatibility with many other species.

We carefully source our fish and monitor their health to ensure they settle well into new aquariums. Our team can help you select species that work well together, recommend suitable tank sizes, and advise on heating, filtration, and water conditions required to keep tropical fish thriving.

Coldwater fish are a great option for aquarists looking for species that do not require heated aquariums. These fish are often hardy and well suited to beginner setups, making them a popular starting point for many fishkeepers.

At Smith’s Aquatics we stock a range of coldwater species suitable for aquariums and certain outdoor pond environments. Our team can advise on tank sizes, filtration needs, and compatible species to ensure your coldwater aquarium remains balanced and healthy.

Choosing the right aquarium is one of the most important steps when starting fishkeeping. We stock a variety of aquariums and starter kits designed to make setting up a new tank simple and straightforward.

Starter kits typically include essential equipment such as filtration systems, lighting, and sometimes heaters, helping beginners get everything they need in one package. Our team can guide you through selecting the right aquarium size and setup based on the type of fish you plan to keep.

Proper filtration and equipment are essential for maintaining clean, stable water conditions in any aquarium. We offer a range of filters, heaters, lighting systems, air pumps, and other key equipment designed to support different aquarium sizes and fish species.

Whether you are setting up a new aquarium or upgrading an existing one, our team can recommend suitable equipment to keep your tank running efficiently and help maintain a healthy environment for your fish.

Good nutrition and stable water quality are vital to keeping fish healthy. We stock a range of quality fish foods designed for different species, including flakes, pellets, frozen foods, and specialist diets.

Alongside nutrition, we also provide essential water treatments and testing products to help maintain the correct water conditions in your aquarium. Our team can advise on feeding routines, water treatments, and regular maintenance to ensure your fish stay healthy and your aquarium remains balanced.

Robbie has been fishkeeping since the age of five, so aquatics has pretty much always been part of his life. With 11 years in the industry, he’s built up a wealth of knowledge and is always happy to help customers get the best from their tanks. Strangely for someone who works around aquariums all day… he has a genuine phobia of sponges.

Dave has been part of the aquatics industry since 1993 and brings decades of experience with him. He’s a big fan of live plants and has a particular love for L-number plecs. Outside the shop, Dave also has an impressive claim to fame, he was the Cleveland Angling Champion back in 1988.

William is our resident axolotl enthusiast and always enjoys helping customers learn more about these amazing pets. He’s been fishkeeping for around five years and working in the industry for two. When he’s not talking axolotls or fish tanks, he’s usually busy making music as part of his band, Article 64.

George has been fishkeeping for 28 years and joined the aquatics industry two years ago. When he’s not helping customers in the shop, he’s usually involved in film production, two of the films he’s worked on have even been nominated for awards.

A Passion for Aquatics

Fishkeeping is one of the most relaxing and rewarding hobbies when done correctly. Watching a well-balanced aquarium develop into a thriving ecosystem is something many aquarists find incredibly satisfying.

At Smith’s Aquatics we enjoy helping people experience that success. Whether you are keeping a small home aquarium or building a larger display tank, we are always happy to share our knowledge and experience.
